Botswana Bishop and Priests are at the center of the Apostolic Nuncio’s message encouraging the newly ordained bishop to love his priests as his closest collaborators in serving God’s people.

Botswana Bishop and Priests were the focus of a heartfelt message from the Apostolic Nuncio to Botswana during the Episcopal Ordination of Bishop Lawrence Ofentse Pheto, the new Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Francistown. The Vatican diplomat encouraged the new bishop to remain close to his priests, describing them as his “closest collaborators,” while faithfully serving the People of God with humility and prayer.

During the Episcopal Ordination on June 27, Archbishop Henryk Mieczysław Jagodziński reminded Bishop Pheto that the episcopal ministry is first and foremost a vocation of discipleship. He urged the new bishop to support religious communities, encourage families and young people, and remain rooted in prayer as he begins his pastoral ministry.

For Catholics across Africa, the celebration reflects the Church’s continuing mission of raising faithful shepherds who will guide God’s people with compassion, wisdom, and unwavering fidelity to Christ.

Botswana Bishop and Priests: A Ministry of Collaboration

Addressing the newly ordained bishop, Archbishop Jagodziński emphasized that no bishop carries out his ministry alone.

He encouraged Bishop Pheto to cultivate a close relationship with his priests, calling them his “closest collaborators” in proclaiming the Gospel and caring for the faithful.

The Apostolic Nuncio also urged the new bishop to support religious communities and foster vocations while remaining attentive to families, young people, and those most in need of hope and encouragement.

According to Archbishop Jagodziński, authentic episcopal leadership begins with prayer, humility, and faithful discipleship before it becomes a ministry of governance.

A Successor of the Apostles

Reflecting on the meaning of Episcopal Ordination, the Apostolic Nuncio reminded Bishop Pheto that through the laying on of hands he had become a successor of the Apostles.

He explained that the Church entrusts every bishop with the sacred responsibility of being shepherd, teacher, and guardian of the People of God.

Quoting the Apostolic Letter of appointment from Pope Leo XIV, Archbishop Jagodziński said the universal Church needs pastors who sincerely dedicate themselves to serving Christ’s faithful with generous hearts.

He encouraged the new bishop to imitate Christ, the Good Shepherd, by remaining close to those entrusted to his pastoral care.

Hearing the Cry of the Poor

The Apostolic Nuncio also reflected on the words of the Psalmist, reminding Bishop Pheto that “The Lord has heard the cry of the poor.”

He explained that every bishop must likewise hear that cry by remaining close to the poor, the suffering, families, young people, and all those searching for hope.

He encouraged the new bishop to make compassion, listening, and pastoral presence central to his ministry, ensuring that every person experiences the love of Christ through the Church.

Why This Matters for the Church in Africa

The ordination of a bishop is always a moment of joy for both the local Church and the universal Church.

Across Africa, bishops play an essential role in strengthening the faith, supporting priests, promoting vocations, and guiding communities through social, spiritual, and pastoral challenges.

The message given to Bishop Pheto reminds all Church leaders that authentic leadership begins not with authority, but with humble service rooted in Christ.

What Can Catholics Learn From This?

The Episcopal Ordination of Bishop Lawrence Pheto reminds Catholics that leadership within the Church is ultimately an act of service.

Whether called to priesthood, Religious Life, marriage, or the lay vocation, every Christian is invited to imitate Christ by serving others with humility and generosity.

The Apostolic Nuncio’s message also encourages believers to deepen their commitment to C.A.R.E.S. through Confession, Adoration, the Rosary, the Eucharist, and Sacred Scripture.

Through these spiritual practices, Catholics receive the grace to become faithful disciples and joyful witnesses of the Gospel.

A Spiritual Resolution

As we pray for Bishop Lawrence Ofentse Pheto and the Diocese of Francistown, let us ask God to strengthen all bishops, priests, and religious in their ministry.

The Sacrament of Confession: Let us seek God’s mercy and ask for hearts that are humble and ready to serve.

Eucharistic Adoration: Let us pray for bishops and priests who dedicate their lives to shepherding God’s people.

The Holy Rosary: Let us entrust Bishop Pheto, the Diocese of Francistown, and all vocations in Botswana to the maternal care of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Holy Mass: Let us offer our participation at Mass for the sanctification of bishops, priests, and all who serve the Church.

Sacred Scripture: Let us meditate on the words of Jesus: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11)

May Bishop Pheto shepherd God’s people with wisdom and charity.

May priests remain faithful collaborators in the mission of Christ.

And may the Church in Botswana continue to flourish through holy leadership and joyful witness.
