Mozambique Priests Support has become the focus of a pastoral appeal from Bishop António Juliasse Ferreira Sandramo of the Catholic Diocese of Pemba, who is urging Catholics to take an active role in caring for their priests. Speaking during the ordination of two deacons at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Pemba on July 5, the bishop reminded the faithful that the wellbeing and perseverance of priests are not solely personal responsibilities but a mission shared by the entire Christian community.
Addressing the congregation, Bishop Juliasse encouraged Catholics to strengthen their priests through prayer, responsible friendship, and genuine spiritual support. He warned against behaviors that could weaken a priest’s witness, emphasizing that the faithful should help clergy remain faithful, sober, and committed to their vocation.

“The Christian community must always support its pastors,” he said, encouraging Catholics to help priests live faithfully, consistently, and according to the mission entrusted to them by the Church. He also delivered a simple but powerful appeal: “Take care of our priests. Do not harm them.”
The bishop explained that authentic support goes beyond words. It includes encouraging priests in their ministry, praying for them regularly, and helping them remain faithful to their vocation.

While the Church does not forbid moderate consumption of alcohol, he reminded the faithful that drunkenness harms both the individual and the credibility of priestly ministry. Christians, he said, should help priests live lives marked by discipline, moderation, and holiness.
Priesthood Is a Life of Humble Service
Speaking directly to the deacons preparing for priestly ordination, Bishop Juliasse reminded them that priesthood is not a position of privilege or authority.
Instead, he described it as a vocation of generous self-giving modeled after Christ the Good Shepherd.
Recalling the teaching of Pope Francis, the bishop encouraged future priests to remain close to their people, carrying “the smell of the sheep” by serving with compassion, simplicity, and pastoral tenderness.
He also stressed that daily prayer remains the foundation of every fruitful priestly ministry. Without intimacy with God, he warned, ministry risks becoming a burdensome routine rather than a joyful vocation.
