DR Congo Youth Peace is the focus of a Catholic bishop’s appeal urging young people to become artisans of peace, reject division, and bring hope amid insecurity in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

DR Congo Youth Peace was the central message of Bishop Willy Ngumbi Ngengele of the Catholic Diocese of Goma as he called on young people to become “artisans of peace” in a region deeply affected by conflict, insecurity, and division. Speaking during a press conference launching the Diocese’s July youth activities, the bishop encouraged young Catholics to reject violence, tribalism, and manipulation by armed groups, choosing instead to become witnesses of hope and reconciliation.

The bishop acknowledged that eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to endure prolonged violence, leaving many young people marked by fear, displacement, and uncertainty. Rather than allowing conflict to shape their future, he urged them to build relationships rooted in fraternity, dialogue, and Christian hope.

For Catholics across Africa, the bishop’s message is a reminder that lasting peace begins with hearts transformed by Christ and communities committed to reconciliation.

DR Congo Youth Peace Begins with Young People

Bishop Ngumbi emphasized that young people have an essential role in building a peaceful future for the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He explained that the Church’s youth initiatives are intended not only to strengthen faith but also to help young people become leaders of reconciliation within their families, schools, parishes, and communities.

According to the bishop, today’s youth must reject every form of hatred, revenge, and division while learning to become instruments of dialogue and unity.

He stressed that the future of the nation depends largely on a generation willing to choose peace over violence.

Rejecting Tribalism and Division

Reflecting on the ongoing insecurity in eastern Congo, Bishop Ngumbi warned that tribalism and social divisions continue to fuel conflict.

He encouraged young people from different ethnic and social backgrounds to meet, pray, work, sing, and grow together instead of allowing differences to separate them.

The bishop explained that genuine encounters between young people help overcome prejudice and create opportunities for mutual understanding.

Only through dialogue, he said, can communities break the cycle of mistrust that has caused suffering for so many families.

Becoming Witnesses of Hope

Bishop Ngumbi also encouraged young Catholics to become “witnesses of hope” despite the hardships facing their communities.

He reminded them that Christians are called not only to pray for peace but also to live it through their daily words and actions.

Whether at school, at home, or within their parish communities, young people have the opportunity to reflect Christ’s love by promoting forgiveness, respect, and solidarity.

The bishop said these small acts of charity become powerful signs of hope in regions where violence often dominates daily life.

Why This Matters for the Church in Africa

The Church throughout Africa continues to recognize young people as essential partners in building peaceful and just societies.

In countries affected by conflict, Catholic youth are often called to become ambassadors of reconciliation by rejecting hatred and promoting dialogue.

Bishop Ngumbi’s appeal reflects the Church’s conviction that peace is built not only through political agreements but also through conversion of hearts and faithful Christian witness.

His message encourages every Catholic to invest in forming young people who can become leaders of hope for future generations.

What Can Catholics Learn From This?

The bishop’s message reminds Catholics that peace begins with each individual.

Every believer is called to reject prejudice, violence, and division while choosing forgiveness, charity, and mutual respect.

His appeal also invites the faithful to deepen their commitment to C.A.R.E.S. through Confession, Adoration, the Rosary, the Eucharist, and Sacred Scripture.

These spiritual practices strengthen Christians to become authentic disciples who bring Christ’s peace into their homes, parishes, and communities.

A Spiritual Resolution

As we pray for the young people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, let us ask God to make them courageous builders of peace.

The Sacrament of Confession: Let us ask the Lord to free our hearts from hatred, prejudice, and division.

Eucharistic Adoration: Let us pray for young people living in areas affected by violence, asking Christ to strengthen them with hope.

The Holy Rosary: Let us entrust the youth of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the maternal protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Holy Mass: Let us offer our participation at Mass for peace, reconciliation, and healing throughout eastern Congo.

Sacred Scripture: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)

May the young people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo become courageous witnesses of hope.

May peace overcome division.

And may Christ, the Prince of Peace, guide the nation toward reconciliation and lasting unity.
